CLIMATE CHANGE LEVY
KYOTO PROTOCOL TO THE UNITED NATIONS FRAMEWORK CONVENTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE
It is now widely accepted by most governments of the world that Carbon Dioxide
emissions caused by burning fossil fuels, is leading to global warming. In an
effort to focus the efforts of business' to consider 'carbon risk' the UK government
introduced the Climate Change Levy (CCL) in April 2001. This forms an important
part of the UK government's strategy to tackle climate change.
The climate change package includes energy efficient agreements with energy
intensive sectors that could result in savings of 5 million tonnes of Carbon
Dioxide emissions. The levy is designed to have a neutral effect, through a
reduction of 0.3% in employers National Insurance contributions. The government
has made ?150 million available for energy efficiency measures, renewable energy
projects and the Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme.
COST OF CLIMATE CHANGE LEVY PER KILOWATT HOUR:
The monetary value of the levy is dependant on the type of energy and is charged
per kilowatt hour of energy consumed.

The levy is shown on your business electricity bill before VAT.
TONNE OF CARBON DIOXIDE
With all these values and figures being thrown around, it is easy to be confused.
Picture this: an average household's use of fossil fuel results in over 6 tonnes
of Carbon Dioxide being emitted into the environment in a single year. This
is probably heavier than the average family car!
